KAYOND moved this project from an initial expanding-mandrel inquiry to a clamp stacker solution. Structural assessment and testing with the customer’s actual load established a way to lift and rotate the spool without damaging the wound material.

The initial expanding-mandrel inquiryThe customer initially requested an expanding-mandrel truck. After reviewing the spool construction, KAYOND’s technical team identified a hollow central structure that could not provide reliable internal support for the mandrel. Expansion alone would therefore not establish a suitable load-bearing grip.
Selecting a suitable gripping methodKAYOND explained the limitation and recommended a clamp stacker to lift and rotate the load through external gripping. The selection focused on suitable gripping locations and load support, rather than whether a mandrel could simply enter the center opening.
Addressing the risk of material damageThe customer was concerned that excessive clamping pressure could damage the wound material, while insufficient pressure would not hold the load securely. KAYOND asked the customer to send the actual load for testing so the gripping arrangement could be assessed beyond the dimensional drawings.
Testing With the Customer’s LoadActual-load test The clamp holds and lifts the customer’s spool Rotation performance was confirmed during project testing
Adjusting the clamping pressureAfter receiving the load, KAYOND adjusted the clamping pressure and tested gripping, lifting and rotation with the actual sample. The checks covered load retention during movement and the condition of the contact areas.
Project outcomeFollowing adjustment, the equipment successfully lifted and rotated the supplied spool without damaging the wound material during testing. This addressed the customer’s concerns about both secure gripping and material protection.
Application-specific engineeringThe project combined technical selection, actual-load verification and clamping-pressure adjustment. KAYOND revised the handling method around the load’s support characteristics, then used sample testing to confirm a solution suited to the customer’s spool construction and operating requirements.
